chrysalist
A forest haven with room for two, improbably suspended by hundreds of threads from trees in a copse in Alexandra Park, Manchester.
The threads supporting the work create a sense of containment, warmth and seclusion while still allowing visitors to see in and out. When sitting in the work, the visitor is invited to contrast the comfort of the interior of the nest with their trust in its suspension.
Lights mounted around the space create a web of shadows. The thread is dense enough that shadows can be cast on its surface - the different layers giving silhouettes an engaging three dimensional quality.
The work is highly portable and suitable for presentation in a variety of contexts, indoors and out. Fixing can be from existing structural, architectural or arboreal features or, where none exist, from a scaffold constructed in the exhibition space.
A commission for wonder[ment] 2012. The work was constructed over the course of a day with a team of volunteers. Particular thanks are due to Dave Perry, Hayley Moses Walsh and Helen Beauchamp.
