curated carparks
A series of glowing panels exploring Blackburn’s iconic shopping centre.
Almost unique in the UK, today’s Mall forms the centre of what was a total redevelopment and restructuring of Blackburn’s centre during the 1960’s and 1970’s.
I grew up in Brighton. While many consider this architecture to be ugly, I find it reassuring, warm and exciting.
Now largely wrapped behind a 90’s façade, a staircase still thrusts deantly skywards above the carpark. The anamorphic beauty of the construction only reveals itself as you walk around it and see it from different angles and it begins to embrace you.
This is reflected in the work which is made of layers of acrylic. Lines etched in its surface catch the light and glow. The work appears almost 3D as you move around it, only snapping into a single, choesive image when you stand right in front.
The work was originally commissioned by Found In Blackburn and was subsequently also exhibited at The National Festival Of Making 2017.
