turn the big light on
Exhilerating commission with More Music to create a flexible and dynamic setting to showcase the talented groups they make music with at Light Up Lancaster 2019.
The breadth and quality of music created at More Music is staggering. Each group has its own style and vibe. The aim of the commission was to allow each group's identity to shine, yet present each performance as part of a cohesive whole.
In 2011 the director of More Music, Loz Kaye, and I worked together on BEAT:TENT:HOOK. There were an number of ideas we came up with during that period that we weren't able to incorporate into that project's outcomes. Together we picked up where we left off and began to develop new ideas. We were particularly interested to explore the different shadows that are created when people are lit differently against a screen, and how these can be used to enhance a performance.
We created The Cube. A white polycarbonate performance space was installed in Sun Square, Lancaster. Careful use of simple lighting effects allowed the space to morph from one performance to the next - from the stark white of a beat boxer to the softer, glowing tones of the Chinese orchestra.
