Flashlight invites a whole community to join forces and illuminate their neighbourhood.
Itʼs art by flashmob!
In the run up to the event, flyers are distributed to every house in the area. Each flyer is printed with instructions showing how to fold it into an origami lantern. A counterfoil on the flyer can be exchanged for a specially designed light kit. Typically we distribute 10,000 - 20,000 flyers.
On the day of the event participants are asked to fold their lantern, assemble their light kit and bring it glowing to a specific place at a specific time. We target locations that people might not normally go, especially after dark - parks, alleyways, a graveyard!
The result is a series of spontaneous light installations. Itʼs also noticeable how taking part in the event encourages people to stop and spend time somewhere they might not otherwise be. We particularly enjoy seeing how people interact with one another as a result of being part of an unusual, mutual experience.
Flashlight was originally commissioned as part of Chorlton Arts Festival 2010 where it was acclaimed as one of the highlights of the event. We have since presented the work in conjunction with Holy Trinity Primary School, Darwen and in Nelson, Lancashire as part of their Portas Pilot scheme.
