A further project with Ridgewood Community High School that moved outside to explore how the school might make more use of its outside space, and how the boundaries of the school could be gently softened.
While working on The Lab, we regularly noticed that staff and pupils commented that the school's play yard felt penned in and uninviting. We worked with a group of pupils from year 10 to explore this space and gently challenge how it was perceived.
Taking ideas that were already in development, we used chalk spray to stencil a garden on the footpath, textile pirn to brighten up the fences, and thread to highlight the main entrance.
The school also has an inner courtyard. Working with staff we identified a need to allow pupils to make their mark here as well. We ran some staff workshops during which time we facilitated the development of a series of wooden trees that will be installed in this space and decorated and managed by the school's different year groups.
