sketching with thread
We have been intrigued to find that, when strung over and over, thread forms bold shards of colour across a landscape. Particularly in Lancashire, threadʼs historical context seems to make it fit particularly well in the environment.
The technique is easy to learn and large areas can be covered quickly. The method is ideally suited to creating high-profile, outdoor interventions with participants of all ages. Itʼs a highly satisfying activity!
Some of these examples come from our project working along the Irwell Sculpture trail, engaging the communities that border it. We created an invitation to an event in Chatterton, Ramsbotton attached to reels of cotton that were posted through every letter box in the area. We also worked with Sharon Bisphan to augment and embellish The Birds in Bacup.
